Mazatlán, our beloved Mazatlán: land of the deer, pearl of the Pacific, cradle of successive waves of immigration and colonial city on the beach. As was José Alfredo Jiménez, composer of our de facto city anthem, El Corrido de Mazatlán, “I am a foreigner, born far away from here.” My love affair with this beautiful port began in 1979, when I arrived on “La Bala” train from Nogales. Years later we celebrated our wedding in the garden of the old Hotel Camino Real and then our son’s graduation from ICO. We are blessed that the Mazatlecos have generously embraced our family in this adopted home, enabling us to realize the song’s refrain that “here life passes without tears.” Full of incredible natural beauty and warm, creative people, Mazatlán is a real city, with both joys and problems. I am extremely grateful to be able to live here, and it is my hope that we might all love Mazatlán and work to protect our environment, building a community that is sustainable for and inclusive of all. Mazatlán and its people deserve that and more.
